My answer to someone who says:
There's NO Raw Feeding "scientific studies" is:
"Thousands of years of RAW meaty bones, meats and offal for wolves, tigers,
lions, cheetahs, leopards,
and the wild dogs of Africa and Australia...doesn't
count?"
General Guidelines:
Feed as MUCH variety as you can.
Feed RAW RED meat
(Beef, pork, lamb, venison, bison etc.)
2 to 4 days/week - I also use MEATY chicken backs
Feed once or twice daily (Once puppy is 6 months or so)
Some folks do FAST their dogs once a week...
I don't...it's an individual decision
Feed small amounts of RAW offal (liver, spleen,
kidney)
2 to 3 times a week
Feed some variety of RAW heart meat
2 to 3 times a week (considered to be a muscle meat)
Feed GREEN TRIPE at least once a week
Feed fish once a week (NOT
Tuna)
(canned JACK mackerel, salmon, water pack sardines)
or RAW fish - I've used catfish, tilipia, sardines...whatever your animals like!
Feed Adult dogs, 2 to 3% (approx.) of the dog's body weight/day (Puppies
will need quite a bit more!)
Check your dog's ribs/backbone once a week and adjust portions as needed.
FEED APPROX. : 60% RAW Meaty Bones
(Meat with bone- chicken necks, meaty backs, thighs, legs, whole chickens, cut
up)
35% Muscle Meat (meat without bones)
5% Organ (offal) meat (liver, kidney, spleen)
Fruit and/or veggie mushes are not necessary!
Feed High Omega 3 RAW eggs
at least twice a week ~ with or without shell
Feed QUALITY Salmon/Fish oil capsules 5 days a week
Optional: Once a week supplement with 1/2 tsp.
each of kelp and alfalfa leaf
If you can find whole prey (rabbits, ducks, chickens, etc.) that is wonderful.
Since these meals are usually bigger than normal, fast the day before or after feeding a whole prey animal.
You may even fast for 2 days if the meal was really large.
If your dog's stools are too loose and dark, you probably fed something that is
too rich or too much of a rich item. Liver is notorious for causing loose stools. Liver is very good for your
dog, so don't be afraid to feed it...but start with a very small amount and then adjust to tolerance. Feed items with
more bone to correct this.
Remember to supply a VARIETY of raw meaty items each week. Each meal does
NOT have to be balanced. It's "balance over time"! It's OK to
do poultry for 3 days in a row, but then feed some red meats. Each type of meat contains different nutrients and
amino acids, so if you feed a variety, your dog will get superior nutrition for a longer life.
RAW FED dogs do grow slower, but they grow HEALTHIER.
I haven't seen any growth spurts, where they are out of proportion. They
typically look like miniature adults, not all gangly or high in the rear, etc.
